They would eat, and eat, but never feel full, despite their full bellies. Eventually they would wither away and die of starvation as though they had eaten nothing at all.

When it began to appear that Downing would not cooperate, Hallwell secretly began working with others in the Vatican to deal with Downing on their own - separate from the new Pope.

The killer's 5th victim, Fawn was found with her throat cut and her heart cut out. Unlike the other victims, however, there was a pearl found in her stomach.

The Unseen Ruler of Hell's Fifth Level fabricated scriptures for his subjects to follow a trillion years ago. Over the eons, the damned souls who reside in the fifth level have come to religiously follow the scriptures without question. They pray for the day when the foretold messiah will arrive to release them from Hell.

Their envy of those who escaped Hell's clutches has stained them green over the ages, and their desire for their messiah is overwhelming. Of course, the messiah will never come, he too is a fabrication. The Unseen Ruler uses his false religion to control and torment his subjects.

Malebolgia, ruler of his own level of Hell, disrupted this plan in order to spite the Unseen Ruler. He did this by allowing Spawn to appear briefly in the fifth level - long enough to instill doubt amongst its denizens and lay the seed of destruction for the false religion.

When Spawn and the Savage Dragon both appeared in the 5th Level on the same day, the residents did not know which was the messiah. They forced them to battle for supremacy, from which Spawn emerged victorious. But when Spawn refused to allow Dragon to be executed, they turned on him. When both Dragon and Spawn disappeared, the 5th level was left without their retribution and without a messiah. And so the scriptures began to be doubted and the level was changed forever.
